Albums of 2014: Mid-year round-up

Although 2014 got off to a slow start in terms of new releases (with more than a few anticipated albums still to come), the year’s first and second quarters have churned out a svelte but strong set of albums.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib’s collective effort Pinata deserves particular mention – not just the year’s best hip-hop record to date but 2014’s finest overall. The biggest surprise of the year so far goes to Leon Vynehall with his extended EP of dancehall house Music for the Uninvited, while Katy B’s sophomore effort Little Red does a fine job of toeing the line between garage and pop.

For the whole list – including a few taster singles from the year’s upcoming albums – check my spotify playlist here.
